In 2007, the Church of the Nazarene and World Vision began partnering to alleviate food insecurity in the Mzimba district, a rural area 280 kilometers (174 miles) from Malawi’s largest city and capitol, Lilongwe. Through the Nazarene 30 Hour Famine, powered by World Vision, a program that teaches young people about hunger while they fast for 30 hours, Nazarene students and congregations have raised thousands of dollars for hunger alleviation.

Mzimba Malawi Food Security Project: New 30 Hour Famine Video

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries partners with World Vision to put on the 30 hour Famine each year where groups of people raise money as they pledge to not eat for 30 hours to raise awareness of world Hunger. Proceeds the last few years have gone to the Mzimba District in Northern Mali where some of the famine participants traveled and served in August 2012.

Barrio Belencito Corazón is a tough neighborhood. It is in an area known as Commune Thirteen, the most violent section of Medellín, Colombia’s second largest city, which is also known for its drug-related gang warfare. In the middle of that neighborhood lives a 10-year-old girl named Paula* (pictured in top right photo). She survives there with her mother and two sisters, ages 6 and 4, at the territorial boundary of two rival gangs where she hears gunshots regularly.
