From Scarcity to Abundance: How a Community Water Project Changed Lives

AUGUST 21, 2025 ~ NCM STAFF; SAMUEL OKETCH

In the rural Rachuonyo community of Kenya, access to clean water had long been a challenge. Women and children bore the burden of walking long distances every day to collect water from contaminated sources, exposing them to waterborne diseases and leaving little time for school or income-generating activities. Water scarcity also led to poor sanitation, frequent illness, and high school absenteeism.

Recognizing this urgent need, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM), in partnership with local churches, launched a community-led water project to provide a sustainable solution.

The first step was drilling a borehole. With the help of technical experts and local government support, NCM Kenya identified a strategic location within the church compound for a deep borehole with high water yield potential. Drilled to a depth of 74 meters, it now provides a reliable water supply year-round.

To ensure long-term success, a Water Management Committee—made up of local community members—was trained to oversee system maintenance and management. Hygiene awareness sessions were also conducted to promote safe water handling, sanitation, and disease prevention, ensuring lasting impact.

Since the project’s completion, life in the village has been transformed. More than 1,215 households now have access to safe drinking water, significantly reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall health. The availability of clean water near the community school has boosted attendance, as children no longer spend hours fetching water. Women, once burdened with long daily trips, now have time for farming and small businesses, bringing social and economic benefits to the entire community.

Caroline Owino, a mother of five, shared:
“Before this project, we used to wake up before dawn and walk for hours just to fetch water. The water was often dirty, and our children were constantly sick. Now, with the borehole nearby, life has become much easier, and my children are healthier.”

The local school’s headteacher, Paul Ojwang’, has seen the difference as well:
“Access to clean water has greatly improved hygiene in our school. Cases of waterborne diseases have reduced, and our students can now focus on their education.”

The Rachuonyo Community Water Project stands as a powerful example of community-driven solutions and faith-based development. Through partnerships, innovation, and a shared commitment to serve, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Kenya has transformed lives by making clean water accessible—and opened the door to a healthier, more hopeful future.
